I think English class is an essential subject for its ability to teach students how to communicate. Students, regardless of their paths out of high school, will likely have to communicate to some gatekeeper--a college, an employer, a friend, or someone or something else--their desire to be set on that path. Few classes deal with communication through writing, speaking, and listening quite like an English class. For students to figure out the substance of a message or articulate their message is the primary concern for all English classes I teach.
